The CMGVRW trainers have successfully implemented the MEDIATION4ROMA training program in Brussels, Belgium. On the 16th, 17th and 18th of September, the face-to-face sessions gathered people of various backgrounds: members of the Roma community, Travelers, men, women, natural mediators (volunteers) and employed mediators. The diversity inherent to this group turned out to be a particularly enriching factor throughout the training and the many interactions that arose from it.
The first step to develop the Roma Mediators’ Training was the organization of pilot test in el Prat de Llobregat the 11th and 12th of May. The City Council of El Prat de Llobregat offered support to the event and explained the Roma mediation process that the city council has already developed in San Cosme’s Neighbourhood for 25 years. A public event in Timisoara (Romania) was celebrated the past 21st of April. The meeting was dedicated to discuss and reflect on mediation in the field of education and the role of school mediators. During the meeting, Mediation4Roma consortium reminded the importance of VET certification in Europe, emphasizing the importance to look for the support of national certification centers during the implementation of the training.
After more than 20 years of mediation between Roma children, their families, schools and local municipalities, Catalonia has young Roma very well prepared with post-compulsory education. Young Roma are taking the lead in neighborhoods’ assemblies and local councils in order to express what it means to be Roma today, and how Roma community is facing day by day racism and the multiple ways of discriminations and high levels of poverty that they suffer.
